The museum officially opened its doors in 1957 and has since expanded to include a diverse range of artists from Melbourne, Adelaide, and beyond. The gallery’s purpose-built building, which showcases unique geometric architecture in the brutalist tradition, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 11, 1977.
